The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of a first cycle degree awarded by this University, or any other higher education institution recognized for this purpose, in an area of study deemed relevant by the Board and approved by Senate. The degree which must be pegged at Level 6 on the Malta Qualifications Framework, should comprise not less than 180 ECTS credits and should be classified at least at Second Class Honours or Category II.

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. The MSc in History of Architecture (by research) will help you to engage deeply with primary sources, conduct research as well as work alongside experts in the field. It offers the flexibility to pursue your interests within architectural history where you can foster comprehensive and critical understanding. Your research will allow you to make significant contribution to the scholarly study of architecture's past and its influence on modern design and practice.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty for the Built Environment.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives in their chosen area of study.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the methods used in research and the conclusions derived.
  • Analyse and evaluate information that is relevant to the research problem.
  • Develop an appropriate research methodology, based on the research question(s) set.
  • Design research tools (questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, observation schedules etc.) which are not biased and respecting ethical considerations.
  • Select appropriate sample size and selection, being aware of type of claims that can be drawn from the results obtained.
